Dr. Jeffrey Carls Family Medicine and Aesthetics is currently offering an alternative to the little blue pill. Low-intensity extracorporeal pulsewave therapy (or just “pulsewave therapy” for short) improves erectile function in patients with vasculogenic ED.
WHAT ARE SOME CAUSES OF ED?
Chemical messages to the blood vessels create an erection, so a disruption in this process as a result of one of the following diseases accounts for 70% of ED in men.
● Diabetes
● Kidney disease
● Chronic alcoholism
● Multiple sclerosis
● Atherosclerosis
● Vascular disease
● Neurologic disease
Smoking, drug use, and being overweight may also contribute to ED.
HOW DOES PULSEWAVE THERAPY WORK?
Non-invasive low-intensity sound waves are passed through the erectile tissue. This clears out the plaque from blood vessels and encourages growth of new vessels. This restores the natural erectile function of the penis, without taking oral medication such as Viagra or Cialis. In effect, it reverses the very cause of the problem—lack of blood flow to the penis.

HOW EFFECTIVE IS IT?
Research shows that over half of the patients in clinical studies still report positive results after 12 months post treatment. However, like all treatments, it really does depend on the individual. The number of treatments a patient needs will vary (usually 6-12), but what is important is that this therapy has the potential to free men from taking medication for their sexual health and to help them start regaining natural function.
WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE?
The pulse wave therapy itself takes 15-30 minutes per session and is virtually pain-free. Ultrasound gel is used on the penis to transmit the sound waves. There might be some redness on the skin, but patients may resume sexual activity the same day. Natural function as a result of treatment might take a week or more to set in.
AM I A CANDIDATE FOR PULSEWAVE THERAPY?
If you experience mild to intermediate erectile dysfunction, you might be a candidate. Starting therapy while ED is still mild may actually correct the natural dysfunction and provide lifelong results. Along with the therapy, it is important to have a healthy lifestyle to counter any of the health-related issues that might be causing poor blood flow.
